But first, let's talk New Year's resolutions. )

New Year's time is meme time, so here goes:

Your main fandom of the year? 2011 was a very mixed bag. Not a very productive year, fic-wise, but still a year in which I fell head over heels for some new fandoms and rediscovered my love for old ones. I don't think there was a 'main' fandom that jumped out, though. I've always been multifannish, this year just more so than usual. My writing, too, has been all over the place.

Your favorite film watched this year? A tie between Deathly Hallows Part II and X-Men First Class. Neither of which I would call the best film I've seen this year, but they were definitely favorites, each for their own reason. DH because I went into the theater with pretty huge expectations that I never expected to be met, and walked out feeling entirely satisfied; XMFC for the opposite reason, in that I hardly knew the fandom and had no idea what to expect, and found the film a glorious and hugely entertaining surprise.

Your favorite book read this year? Night Watch, by Terry Pratchett. For a long time I just wasn't into Discworld at all, having read one of the books (in an admittedly crappy Dutch translation) several years ago and being fairly underwhelmed by it. I gave it another try this year and picked up Night Watch at the library - and was very impressed. I've been steadily working my way through the series for the better part of this year now.

Your favorite TV show of the year? Merlin, which turned out to be just the mix of charm, wit and moral dilemmas that I needed, sort of like what Stargate: Atlantis was for me last year. Thanks, [personal profile] selenak, for tempting me into it!

Your favorite DW/LJ community of the year? Discovering the abundance of B5 comms at Tumblr was a very pleasant surprise, as was the [community profile] twinpeaks comm at DW, new since this year.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Tumblr. Even though I barely post myself, it's fun to watch all the fannish stuff roll by!

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? A colleague recommended Stargate: Universe to me, but so far I'm pretty 'meh' about it. Some of the characters have potential, but in all honestly I'm finding it all rather dark and tedious and a bit depressing; also, it doesn't feel much like Stargate to me. Unless that's just the early episodes and I should just press on to where it gets better?

Your fandom boyfriend of the year? I'm more or less over him now, but I'd have to say Charles Xavier. I had it pretty bad for him. :)

Your fandom girlfriend of the year? Gwen from Merlin or Gwen from Torchwood, depending on what mood you caught me in.

Your biggest squee moment of the year? This exchange between Gwen and Jack in TW: Miracle Day. "I'll kill you if it means saving my daughter." "I'll kill you if it means saving my life." Brutal honesty and perfect understanding, and I loved how this showcased Jack and Gwen as equals in a way they've never been before.

The most missed of your old fandoms? In retrospect, I wish 2011 had had more Star Trek in it. I didn't even write any fic in the fandom! But we have Sci-Fi channel now, and they're going to be showing Enterprise, which I'm actually looking forward to. I know it's not the most popular of Treks, but I figure it will still be a nice reunion with the fandom.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? I'd love to get more into Santuary. I've caught a few errant episodes, but they were rather generic ones that didn't really pull me in. Lots of my flisties seem to love the show, though, so I really want to try to get invested. If only because Amanda Tapping seems amazing in the role!

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year? I'm really looking forward to seeing The Hobbit. Not an original answer, I know. Also, I really hope I'll be able to go a convention this year. It's been some time since my last one, and the lineup for Fedcon in Germany is starting to look quite tempting, so... *ponders*

Despite (or maybe because of?) not having signed up, I ended up writing three treats this year! Not sure if that means I should have signed up anyway, because there's still a huge difference between getting to pick your own prompt and getting one assigned, stress-level-wise. But it's a good sign! I did miss writing a Yuleletter and anxiously waiting for/squeeing over a gift, though, so I really hope I'll be able to sign up again next year.

As for the fics I wrote: two of them I'd actually planned for, in the sense that I scrolled through the Yuleletter list and picked up the two prompts that appealed to me most. The third one was, shall we say, an impulsive decision. *g* Here are all three:

Face of the Moon (Twin Peaks, 2596 words) ... or read it on DW or LJ.
Summary: Diane doesn't work in the spotlights. If Dale is the bright face of the moon, then let her be the other face, the one people don't see. That doesn't mean she's not part of the story.
Characters: Diane, Audrey Horne, Albert Rosenfield, Gordon Cole, Harry Truman, Denise Bryson, Dale Cooper.

Written for [personal profile] allchildren, who specifically asked for Diane fic - a challenge I just couldn't pass up! Of the stories I wrote this year, this is still my personal favorite. No small thanks to my ever-gorgeous beta [livejournal.com profile] nemo_everbeing, who was so kind as to critically review this story while still working on her own Yuletide fic! I wasn't sure whether having Diane as a POV character would work for everyone, but the feedback I received on this was heartwarming and awesome. *beams*

Fake Plastic Life (Galaxy Quest (1999), 1651 words) ... or read it on DW or LJ.
Summary: Sometimes all you need ends up being right in front of you. Alexander should know.
Characters: Alexander Dane, Gwen DeMarco, Jason Nesmith.

A short character vignette written for [livejournal.com profile] celandineb, who wanted to read about Alexander Dane and how he went from playing Richard III to being Dr. Lazarus on a cheesy sci-fi television show. The overall quality of GQ fic this year was just stunning, and compared to all the other stories this little piece feels really lightweight, but people seemed to like it as well, so yay! Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] everywherestars for the beta.

Be My Homeward Dove (Twin Peaks, 2115 words) ... or read it on DW or LJ.
Summary: Five goodbyes in Twin Peaks which really aren't goodbyes at all.
Characters: Sarah Palmer, Albert Rosenfield, Harry Truman, Audrey Horne, Dale Cooper.

On Dec 23rd, [personal profile] st_aurafina posted a note on her journal mentioning she was on the pinch hit list. I knew she'd asked for Twin Peaks fic, among other things, and my flaily little Twin Peaks heart couldn't bear the thought that she might not receive any, so... I dived in.

I didn't stress out over the other two fics, but boy, did I stress out over this one! I wrote most of it at night, struggling to stay focused and keep my fingers going on the keyboard. I finished the last part the next morning, re-read the whole fic... and promptly panicked. Was I really going to gift a story that I'd written in a few hours' time, knowing how rough and unpolished it still felt to me? And gift it to someone who's not just a casual TP fan but has produced some great work of her own? And then I owe a massive thanks to [personal profile] selenak, for agreeing to do an extremely last-minute beta and providing not only reassurance but some life-saving suggestions for edits as well! At which point I worked in the edits, re-read the whole thing again, and finally felt courageous enough to post it. I don't think I've ever been more relieved about a fic than when [personal profile] st_aurafina commented to say she enjoyed her gift!

In short: I had a lovely Yuletide, and I hope the same goes for all of you who participated, in whichever way, big or small! Thanks so much to everyone who read and/or left comments or kudos on my stories; that means a lot to me. *hugs*

Once again, wishing y'all a very happy New Year!

Just returned from our annual end-of-year get-together with friends; tomorrow we'll be celebrating New Year's day with the family. But first, bed. *craves*

Wishing you all the very best for the coming year! To borrow someone else's words:

May you have warm words on a cold evening,
a full moon on a dark night,
and the road downhill all the way to your door.

Thank you for being here; you're all precious to me. *hugs* Happy New Year!

(ETA: The post that was here yesterday and consisted of a first set of recs plus, basically, several paragraphs of me gushing about - well, silly things? I just went and deleted the bit that was me being a drama queen. (Which I probably should have flocked in the first place, but I forgot.) Thanks to those who read and commented, and apologies to those who actually have serious things to worry about this Christmas period and who witnessed me in that state. I was tired, and not very rational, and probably a bit desperate for company; I'm sorry. Have now had a good night's sleep, which helps significantly in the 'putting things into perspective' department.)

Have some more recs from the Yuletide front:

The Yuletide 2011 collection has opened! I wasn't an official participant this year, but my recipients liked their respective Yuletide treats, which made me happy. I do intend to sign up again next year, if I can - I missed the squeeing over assignments and the obsessively checking the 'gifts' tag at AO3 and the joy of opening one's present - but I had a good time!

Off to eat leftover Christmas turkey now, and little pears filled with dried cranberries. :)

And a number of quick Yuletide recs, in random order:

From the Dirt - Carnivale
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Clayton Jones, Ben Hawkins, Sofie Bojakshiya
Summary: 'The lights glittered in their eyes, reflecting the new and strange visions their minds hadn’t dared to imagine.' A glimpse of the world as seen from the base of the Ferris Wheel.

By Narrow Domestic Walls - Twin Peaks
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Characters: Dale Cooper, Albert Rosenfield, Gordon Cole

So they built an office with a Zen garden. Albert appreciates sleek, modern furniture; Cooper likes Eastern antiques. So now their apartment is decked out in sleekly modern furniture imported from Tibet. Albert prefers quiet when he sleeps; Cooper drifts off listening to Tuvan throat singing. Albert has gotten used to earplugs. At each turn, one or both of them have seen their way through to a solution. The result is not so much a ‘normal life’ as it is a life that’s right for them, and insane for everyone else.

Better With Tentacles - Galaxy Quest (1999)

Happy Christmas to all who celebrate! Happy Yuletide to y'all!

Random fact of the day: for some reason I'm nervous as hell about this year's Yuletide, and I didn't even sign up.
Go figure. *facepalm*

Anyone who guesses which treat(s) are mine gets an extra Yuletide hug! I might even throw in a drabble, who knows. :)

(Entirely meme-unrelated thought first: I now have finished drafts for TWO Yuletide treats, yay! Both of which are comfortably over the 1000-word mark, so maybe I should have signed up anyway. Dang. No reason to be glum, though, I'm sure I'll enjoy all of the lovely fic written for others just as much! *counts the days longingly*)

1. The online fannish experience. Never mind all my angsting over readership, popularity, being remembered and recognized, or the occasional oh-my-god-am-I-a-good-author-or-not panic attack, please don't doubt this for a moment: every single reader, every comment or bit of feedback that I receive is precious to me. Every single person I get to interact with online, whether it's in a deeply philosophical discussion or just to exchange a tiny random little fact, is precious to me. I may be writing primarily because I love to write, but I'm posting because I love the interaction and the company, and I'm grateful for every friend and/or acquaintance I've made here. Don't you doubt it.

2. Babylon 5(*), for tempting me back into the fannish fold as an adult, about a decade after having (supposedly) grown out of it sometime in my late teenage years. Turns out I hadn't grown out of it at all. On the contrary, my love for certain fandoms and characters is much deeper now than back when I was still a teen crushing on Captain Kirk. *g* I love the kind of shared fannish experience that isn't just about squeeing over a show (even though it can, and should, be that too!) but also about bringing one's personal thoughts and opinions to a fandom, trying to make sense of it and enhance it and turn it into something personal, something that can be a lot more than, to quote the famous William Shatner sketch, "just a TV show."

(*) Most specifically, Peter Jurasik, Stephen Furst and the late Andreas Katsulas, for bringing to life their characters in a way that made me absolutely, unconditionally and fully, fall in love with them. Without them, I might never have had the impulse to come back to fandom at all.

3. BBC 2, for having aired the original Star Trek back when I was thirteen or so, which was what turned me into a sci-fi fan in the first place. Much as I've grown attached to the online experience, I'm also grateful for having been a fan in the days before the internet and DVDs, when all there was were magazines and VCR, and people still had pen pals, and the only way I ever got to buy Star Trek novels was by traveling to London and paying a visit to the Forbidden Planet. Not because those days were so much better, but because to have known a time where every scrap of fannish material you found, be it as small as a newspaper cutting, was a squee-worthy discovery, only makes me appreciate fandom in the internet age that much more!

4. Conventions. Specifically, living within a 300-kilometer radius of mainland Europe's best (as far as I know) and, these days, only, large sci-fi convention, being FedCon in Germany. It may be less spectacular than the USA's mega-cons, which I've never had the chance to go to, but it's friendly and atmospheric, and they always have a number of great guests. For instance, I saw Leonard Nimoy there, and Nichelle Nichols, and Brent Spiner and Robert Picardo and Kate Mulgrew; right after the BSG finale they had E.J. Olmos, Michael Hogan and James Callis, and the year right before that Mary McDonnell. My biggest frustration is still that they had a heap of Babylon 5 guests just a year before I discovered the show: there was Stephen Furst, and Julie Caitlin Brown, and Bruce Boxleitner and Peter Jurasik did a joint panel there, for heaven's sake, and I didn't even knew who the guys were! I was like: why is the audience going wild for a guy who played a middle-aged alien with a ridiculous hairdo? Gah, how ignorant I was... :)

5. In terms of specific fannish experiences to be grateful for: having lived though the Harry Potter rage first-hand. I'm not going to claim they were the best novels I've ever written or the best movies I've ever seen, but it was the most memorable fannish phenomenon I've been part of so far, and I loved every moment of it. I loved buying the books the moment they came out and then reading until the sun came up; I loved seeing the movies as they were being made, with all the long waits in between, and all those young actors growing up throughout them; and I loved how it all ended last year, not with a whimper but a bang. I wouldn't want have missed it for the world.

amatara: (SGA Elizabeth)
Erm - is there anyone else on my flist not doing Yuletide this year? I still think not signing up was the only good call I could make, considering my last fannish commitment took me six months to fulfill and the coming months won't be any less hectic. But all those Yuletide letters and the general squee over assignments are making it very hard not to feel like I'm missing out. I don't think I ever saw so many of my flisties sign up before, either! *is impressed* Ah, well, too late for regrets now. And I can still write Treats, after all!

Both LJ and DW seem... eerily quiet, this week. Is everyone hibernating over their Yuletide assignments? Even the B5 comms on Tumblr look almost dead, and that never happens. What's going on? I am slightly creeped out.
(ETA: Ah. Thanksgiving today. That explains something, I suppose. :) Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate!)

Lesson of the week: I should write more drabbles. Maybe writing that one fic in HP fandom (the flood of response! *is still baffled*) has spoiled me for tiny fandoms? Or maybe I'm just tired, and cranky, and in need of a hug.
Posting a 400-word B5 drabble, scribbled down in two hours' time: 3 comments plus 3 kudos at AO3. Tiny fandom is tiny, so six reactions is a lot in my experience; six reactions is yay!
Posting a 4000-word B5 story, written and re-written over the course of several months: 3 reads on LJ and 6 hits at AO3, plus 1 comment. I know it's a normal phenomenon - short and humorous is more accessible than long and dark, after all - but I don't know if I'll ever get used to it. Or maybe I will, but my ego might not. Is it that the fic mentions Lyta/Byron in the notes? Is it that the title is French but sounds like bad English? Is it something else? Is it nothing? Is it me? (Did I ever tell you how I worry that, say, a year from now, no one will even remember anything I've written? Everything is so very transitory, and mostly I cope rather well with that, but sometimes it scares the hell out of me.)

I think I'm a little starved for company. Does it show?
amatara: (g'kar)

So here it is, finally! My second [livejournal.com profile] help_japan story, this one for the lovely [livejournal.com profile] yetanothermask, who asked for post-canon Lyta/G'Kar fic, G'Kar's POV. It took me ages to finish this, but, combined with the B5 revival over on Tumblr, which I've been cautiously following from the sidelines, I really am getting nostalgic for the show all over again. I've even started reediting some of my old B5 fics (and, boy, some of my early ones could really do with some editing) just to get a feel for the characters again. Go figure. :)

Any feedback is loved, con-crit included – it feels like ages since I posted something other than a drabble in this fandom, so I'd be thrilled if you'd let me know what you think! ♥

I'm baaaack! My darling Internets, never leave me again! *clutches laptop with newly reestablished connection to chest*

In the interim, judging from all the Dear Yuletide letters floating around, it seems I've managed to miss Yuletide nominations? Which I'm okay with, actually, because I was considering to skip this year anyway, so this saved me a considerable amount of angsting over said fact. :) It's not that I'm skipping because I didn't enjoy it in the past - I did, tremendously - but that to take on any kind of fannish commitment is probably not a good idea right now, RL being as hectic as it is. Which doesn't mean I may not end up writing someone a treat anyway, if a prompt catches my fancy. Just no official signup for me this year.

Oh, also - draft version of the [livejournal.com profile] help_japan Lyta/G'Kar story is finished, yay! So at least I spent the Internet-less days being productive. :)

Now... I believe I have some catching up to do. *scoots off happily*

So, should anyone be wondering where in blazes I've disappeared to: our home internet connection is AWOL at the moment, due to a well-intended but idiotic stunt pulled by our cable company. Neither we nor they, it seems, have a clue how and when the problem will get solved, meaning that for now, the only way husband and myself can get access to things like webmail and social media (all of which have been very courteously blocked by our respective employers *sigh*) is at my parents' place. In other words, I won't have much opportunity to post or reply to comments until this has all been properly sorted out. Which will be next week at the earliest - possibly later. *HUGE sigh* So please don't think I'm ignoring you - I'd love nothing more than to be here, interacting, and I hope I'll be able to do just that sometime very soon.

I'm missing you guys already! *sniffs and hugs you all*

In positive news: forced internet deprivation means I suddenly have much more time for stuff like *gasp* writing! As a consequence, I'll probably be finishing my [livejournal.com profile] help_japan story for [profile] crossing_hades sometime in the not-so-far future. Once it's finished, is there anyone who'd be willing to put this through a quick beta? It's B5 G'Kar & Lyta post-series fic, G'Kar's POV, gen-ish for the most part.

1. A belated happy Halloween, everyone! We didn't celebrate the event ourselves, but spent a lovely week-end in Northern France instead. There wasn't a lot of sunshine, but what sunshine there was arrived with perfect timing, allowing a gorgeous sunset walk onto Cap Blanc-Nez. Also, there seemed to be plenty of sunshine over in England, because those famous white cliffs of Dover at the horizon looked very white and shiny indeed:

Cap Gris Nez Cliffs of Dover

2. Which reminds me: I never posted any pictures of our trip to Southwest USA last year. Maybe I should do that one of these days? I've only just finished composing the digital photo album (I am terribly obsessive-compulsive when it comes to holiday photos, meaning I usually spend months sorting and compiling them, at least when it's long trips to distant countries we're talking about) and will be ordering the actual album sometime next week. So I have plenty of picture material just lying around readily-assembled. Let's see what we can do with that, shall we?

3. I'm 600 words into the [livejournal.com profile] help_japan G'Kar & Lyta story I owe [livejournal.com profile] yetanothermask, and advancing slowly but surely, which leaves me optimistic as to the outcome! On the other hand, my character voices now seem to be rusty as all hell. *pouts* In the sense that I just re-read some of my own older B5 fics (starting with Reciprocity, to check how I used to write G'Kar) and found it considerably wittier than what I've written these past weeks. This is... frustrating, to say the least. I expect my writing to improve over time, darn it, not devolve! Seems I've been getting far too little practice lately. About which we could maybe do this:

4. Drabble prompts! I know I've launched prompt requests before and then ended up not writing any of them, so I'm not making any promises as to whether or not I'll deliver, but feel free to try me again! Leave a character or pairing and a short prompt (or a few of them) and I'll see if any of them sparks my imagination. Any characters and fandoms I've done before should be okay, and should you have an idea for something I've never written before, go right ahead!

5. By the way, did you know there is now a rather active B5 community on Tumblr !? There's a general B5 tumblr, another one that focuses on fanworks (both art and fic), plus various character comms ranging from Londo and G'Kar and Vir, over Delenn and Ivanova, to Lyta and Bester. All looking very sparkly and active, so be sure to check them out! Oh, tumblr, where were you two years ago when I was all alone in shipping Londo/G'Kar to high heaven discovering and squeeing about this fandom? *weeps belated tears of fannish joy*

amatara: (Tribble terror)
Why, yes, it is narcissistic - but I've never done this particular meme before, and seeing as I'm still not managing any writing at the moment, this would do both my spirits and my ego a world of good:

If you'd like, please quote a bit of my writing at me. Find that one story of mine that you really like, find a sentence or a paragraph that presses your prose-buttons in the right way, and comment here with it. In return I'll do the same for you!

Also, any news on the fannish front? Recs, fics, anything worth taking a peek at? If so: yes, please! *craves*
