Serious Business

Life wasn't fair. In his profession, anyone who thought otherwise stood to lose the notion pretty fast. That, or lose the job. Or their sanity.

It wasn't that Albert resented fairness. In a halfway decent universe, he'd be as loyal a practitioner as anyone. But the universe they happened to be stuck in was neither decent nor likely to become it overnight. Laura Palmer, Albert thought, working the drill though mangled tissue, would agree.

Back in the day, he'd been convinced Cooper didn't. He knew better by now. It was just that Cooper's reaction was the opposite of his own: to fight bigotry with justice, madness with faith, rage with love, and then hope to hell that something would stick. Albert preferred to battle rage with rage. He didn't do sympathy and he didn't play nice. Life didn't play nice, no matter how much Cooper's stony face across the autopsy table implored him to pretend otherwise. If Albert ridiculed, it was only because the alternative was to take it all seriously. Death was a serious enough business, and he had his own sanity to guard as well.

He ridiculed. That wasn't the same as actually finding something to laugh about.
