Bamberg is my hometown, yes, and definitely worth visiting. (No bombs except one in WWII, hence a completely intact old city center. Which has been declared World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO, no less.) You threw me a bit with "western" as I first automatically assumed you meant it in the traditional West/East German sense, and Bamberg definitely was west of the old border. But then I realized you probably meant it geographically when talking about today's Germany as a whole, in which case the West would be the Rhineland and we'd be far from it.
Older *cough* fans on lj: hm, it's a matter of perspective, I suppose, as I think the young ones are dominant and we're still in a minority, but otoh it might also be that longer meta and more polished fanfic is written by above-25 years old fans, and so you notice them more. Have you ever been to a convention? Because you get the full age variety there, too, at least in the fandoms I was/am in. (This especially cracked me up in Highlander fandom, where according to one article the network thought their audience would be young males between 15-20, whereas the HL convention I was at consisted pretty much exclusively of women between 35-50, with the two or three males attending being someone's husbands.)
